Helen McKinney, MSW, LCSW
I offer grounded, compassionate, and insightful psychotherapy for people experiencing a broad range of issues, including grief and loss, change of life/adjustment issues, relationships and sexuality, sexual and/or gender minority issues include coming out and social stigma, gender dysphoria and transitioning, LGBTQ challenges, family of origin issues, substance use disorders, generalized and social anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, and spiritual issues. I believe in addressing the full spectrum of your concerns, ranging from the most basic to those enduring life patterns that have seemed stuck and/or difficult to change. I use a holistic framework that encompasses exploring and healing the bio, psycho, social, sexual, and spiritual aspects of self to create balance and inner peace. I combine a medical model of diagnosing and treating with an empowerment perspective and skills-based approach. Identifying and supporting strengths, my goal is to help you facilitate change by taking a collaborative approach that creates a safe and trusting relationship based on confidentiality, acceptance and non-judgment. I consistently see my clients gain the skills and tools needed to become more healthy and empowered, and they report feeling more confident as a result of our work having gained the skills and tools needed to alleviate symptoms. If you are feeling alone, please know that help is available by simply calling or sending an e-mail.
My previous experience has been on Riker’s Island in New York City working with adult males in the Restrictive Housing Unit and the Mental Observation Unit focusing on skills training, psychotherapy, and crisis intervention. With a focus on Dialectical Behavior Therapy, my experience in crisis-intervention includes suicide and self-harm assessment and implementation of safety plans, developing treatment targets for individuals living with chronic homelessness, substance use, and providing education in harm reduction for those who engage in sex work. My most recent work has been practicing adherent Dialectical Behavior Therapy where I have served clients in psychotherapy, skills group, phone coaching, and intake assessments.
